This is an Out-and-Back trail. There are moderate switchbacks down the walls to the canyon floor. While descending be wary of cacti such as cholla and prickly pear. Cross Chinle Wash at the bottom of the canyon floor. It may be necessary to wade through the shallow water if there isn't a make shift bridge up. Follow the trail along the canyon floor, through the cottonwood trees to the fenced-off remains of an ancient village housing up to 60 people. This is one of the more famous ancient cliff dwellings of the Anasazi. Canyon de Chelly is best hiked in the spring and autumn as summer often brings high temperatures and afternoon thunderstorms and the winters are cold with snow and high winds, making road and trail conditions hazardous. Except for the White House Trail, it is prohibited to enter the canyons without an authorized guide.
